July 4th runs are almost as popular as picnics and fireworks.  Most communities have a 10k or a 5k run to celebrate the holiday.  It is a great way to burn off the calories that you are going to take in during the day.  Kinda of a pre-emptive strike before the barbeque, beer and chips.

One of my favorite runs,  and a July 4th tradition in my family, is the Kenwood Footrace.  The Kenwood Footrace has been going on for 39 years making it the oldest 10K run in California. There is also a 5k course that is very kid friendly.  The rural setting and running through the vineyards is refreshingly beautiful. This course has a few hills but the downhills are always worth the effort.   The souvenir glass is a nice touch and you can toast your achievement for the whole year! (We have some dating back 10 years!) The race has gone hi tech this year with chip timing. With 1,400 plus runners this is  a welcomed change.  The high tech t-shirt will be the perfect outfit for your afternoon BBQ.  Hang around for the awards and enjoy a pancake breakfast.  A great way to kick off your 4th!

If you don’t want to go to Kenwood then check out the Novato July 4th runs: Firecracker 4 miler and Mayor’s Mile.  This 3rd annual run take place in downtown Novato and you can pick up a souvenir mug for your morning coffee!  I haven’t done this one personally but have heard great things about it.

If an organized run isn’t your thing then just plan your own celebration run.  Lace up your shoes and enjoy the freedom to run.  Or walk up to the top of Putnam Park and enjoy the fireworks.

Happy 4th.
